Sports Betting Revenue Report
By State & Handle

Legal US sports betting is already having a positive financial impact on state budgets. But understanding that benefit of sports betting for each state, specifically legal online betting, is set not a one-state-fits-call calculation. We can look at the total amount wagered (handle) or generated tax revenue, but to understand the popularity of online sports gambling per state, we must first look at a few factors.

Jump to Monthly Report: | 2021 | Arkansas | Colorado | Delaware | Illinois | Indiana | Iowa | Michigan | Mississippi | Nevada | New Hampshire | New Jersey | New York | Oregon | Pennsylvania | Rhode Island | Tennessee | Virginia | Washington D.C. | West Virginia | All-Time | 2020 | 2019 |

  • Tax Rate: Each State has agreed to their own tax rate with the sportsbook licensees.
  • Licensing: Some states like Rhode Island only allow for sports gambling via the state lottery’s sportsbook website while other states have a wide range in the amount of licensed brands allowed. Sportsbooks advertise heavily in states with open licensing in an effort to be the biggest sportsbook per state. Those marketing dollars generate indirect revenue for those state.
  • Other Fees: Most states have application and annual licensing fees that should be considered when looking at the total revenue generated from online betting.
  • Population: The larger states will generate more but household average income and the state’s average age contribute to sports betting per capita numbers.
  • Bordering States: Some states have inflated and potentially unsustainable betting revenue because of neighboring states that have proposed gambling bills of their own and will inevitably offer sports gambling. New Yorkers are estimated to make up more than 25% of New Jersey sports betting handle.
  • The Signup Process: Some states require sports betting accounts to be created in person at a brick and mortar casino. Expect these states to be off to a slow start immediately following their legalization of online gambling. Some sports bettors may never visit a physical casino and will continue betting through local bookies or offshore bookmakers.
